A half-day game drive in Nairobi National Park gives you a genuine safari experience 20 minutes from the city center. You’ll see rhinos, lions, giraffes, zebras, and often cheetahs or leopards against a strange but compelling backdrop of skyscrapers and planes landing at Wilson Airport. It’s not the endless wilderness of the Maasai Mara, but it’s surprisingly good wildlife viewing for something so close to Nairobi. Expect dusty roads, other vehicles, and animals that are somewhat habituated to people. A typical morning drive starts around 6–7 am and lasts 3–4 hours including park time.
Best time is the dry season (June–October and January–February) when animals concentrate around water sources and the grass is shorter. Avoid the long rains (April–May) if possible – tracks get muddy and animals disperse. Expect to pay around $80–$180 per person for a half-day trip depending on group size, vehicle quality, and whether park fees are included. Private vehicles or smaller groups cost more but are worth it.
Pick an early-morning departure to beat the heat and crowds; skip full-day tours unless you really want extra time – the park isn’t large enough to justify it. Bring binoculars, a good camera with zoom, and layers – it can be chilly at dawn. If you only have one safari on your itinerary, spend the money to go to the Mara instead. If you have a spare morning in Nairobi, this is a solid, convenient option.
