Nairobi Game Drive: Worth Doing?

A Nairobi game drive is surprisingly good if you only have a day or two in the city. You’ll see rhino, lion, giraffe, zebra, and often leopard within sight of skyscrapers. It’s not the Maasai Mara — the landscape is drier, more open savanna with a city backdrop — but it’s a genuine wild park and one of the easiest ways to see Africa’s big animals without flying anywhere. Expect a real safari feel for a few hours, then you’re back in Nairobi traffic by lunch or early afternoon.

Best time is June to October (dry season) when animals concentrate around water and grass is short. January–February is also decent. Avoid the long rains (April–May) if possible. Expect to pay around $60–$120 per person for a decent half-day shared or small-group drive in an open-sided vehicle. Full-day or private options jump to $200–$450 depending on group size and vehicle. The ultra-cheap $37 tours exist but are usually large groups in closed vans with poor guiding.

Pick a half-day morning drive in an open Land Cruiser with 4–6 people maximum. Skip anything marketed as a “full-day safari from Nairobi to Mara” — those are exhausting and not worth it. Bring binoculars, a good camera with zoom, and patience. The animals don’t care that the city is 20 minutes away.
