Visiting Nairobi Railway Museum

The Nairobi Railway Museum is a modest but worthwhile stop if you’re into transport history or just want something different from the usual safari circuit. Expect a small indoor exhibition hall with old photographs, signaling equipment, and railway memorabilia, plus a yard full of retired steam locomotives and carriages you can usually climb into. The outdoor section is the real highlight — wandering through rusting but impressive engines from the colonial era and early independence days gives a tangible sense of East Africa’s railway story. It’s low-key, rarely crowded, and takes 45–90 minutes tops. Staff are generally friendly and a short guided tour is usually available if you ask.

Best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June–October or December–February) when Nairobi weather is pleasant for walking around the yard. Expect to pay around $5–12 for entry depending on whether you take the guided option or not; it’s one of the cheaper paid attractions in the city. Tip: skip the indoor displays if you’re short on time or not a hardcore railfan — head straight outside to the trains and climb aboard the old coaches. Pair it with a wander through nearby Jivanjee Gardens afterwards if you want a relaxed half-day in central Nairobi.
