Expect a simple, close-up encounter where you stand on a raised wooden platform at eye level with 4–5-meter-tall Rothschild giraffes. Staff hand you pellets; the giraffes extend their long, dark tongues to take them gently from your hand or mouth if you choose the “kiss” photo. It lasts 15–30 minutes and includes a short talk on conservation and breeding programs. The experience feels surprisingly calm rather than chaotic, though it can get crowded with tour groups. You’ll also see warthogs hanging around below hoping for spilled food.
Best time is the dry season (June–October or January–February) when fewer mosquitoes and clearer skies make the visit more comfortable. Expect to pay around $15–40 per person for the giraffe centre alone; combined half-day tours with the elephant orphanage run $80–150 including transport and guide. Go independently if you’re staying in Nairobi to avoid the markup.
Tip: Feed from the platform in the morning when animals are hungriest and groups are smaller. Skip the giraffe “kiss” if you’re squeamish about slobber; the tongue can leave quite a mess. Bring hand sanitizer and avoid wearing anything you don’t want covered in giraffe saliva.
