Should You Visit Nairobi's National Museum?

The National Museum is a decent half-day stop if you're into human origins or East African wildlife and culture. Expect a large, slightly dated building with three main strengths: excellent hominid fossil casts from the Leakey digs, a solid ethnographic collection showing Kenya's different ethnic groups, and extensive taxidermy halls full of birds and mammals. It's informative rather than spectacular. The attached snake park is small, a bit shabby, and only worth it if you really like reptiles. Most visitors spend 90 minutes to two hours inside.

Best time is during the dry seasons (June to October or late December to March) when Nairobi is cooler and less dusty. Avoid midday heat and weekends if you dislike crowds of school groups. Expect to pay around $15-25 for entry including the snake park, plus another $10-20 if you hire a guide or join a small group tour from your hotel. Taxis or ride-hailing from central Nairobi are straightforward and cheap.

Honest tip: prioritize the paleontology and ethnography halls on the first floor and the bird gallery upstairs; skip the lower floor's random gift shops and poorly lit temporary exhibits. Go early, wear comfortable shoes, and don't expect world-class museum design; treat it as a solid introduction to Kenya's natural and cultural history before you head out on safari.
