A half-day trip to Nairobi National Park gives you the strange experience of watching lions, rhinos, giraffes and zebras with the city skyline in the background. Game drives last 3–5 hours. You'll see plenty of plains animals and sometimes big cats, but don't expect the vast herds or predator kills of the Masai Mara. The park feels more like a pleasant urban nature reserve than a true wilderness. Most tours include a stop at the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage to watch the baby elephants being fed, which is genuinely charming.
Best time is the dry season (July to October) when animals gather near water sources and the grass is shorter. January–February is also decent. Expect to pay around $80–$180 per person for a half-day tour including park fees, vehicle, guide and orphanage visit; private 4x4 tours sit at the higher end. Shared minibus tours are cheaper but less comfortable and flexible.
Pick a morning departure to beat the heat and have better animal activity. Skip the evening tours if you're short on time; the light fades fast. Bring binoculars, water, and a good camera with zoom; the animals are often a fair distance from the track.
