Hiking in Nairobi's Forests: What to Know

Expect a surprisingly green escape just 20-40 minutes from central Nairobi. These forest reserves offer well-marked trails through tall indigenous trees, with the chance to spot monkeys, birds, and occasional duikers. Some routes pass small waterfalls or caves, but don't picture untouched wilderness; you're still in a major city, so you'll hear distant traffic and occasionally meet other walkers or runners. Trails range from easy flat paths to moderate hills. A half-day outing (3-5 hours) is typical and gives a solid taste without exhausting you in the equatorial sun.

The best time is June to October during the dry season when trails are less muddy and wildlife is easier to see. Short rains in November and long rains from March to May can turn paths slippery and bring out more mosquitoes. Expect to pay around $80-150 per person for a guided half-day experience including transport from central Nairobi; independent entry is much cheaper but requires your own vehicle or taxi and a guide for safety and navigation.

Pick Karura if you want varied terrain and the famous waterfall; skip anything billed as a "full-day" unless you genuinely enjoy long slow walks. Bring insect repellent, wear proper hiking shoes with grip, and carry more water than you think you'll need. Go early in the morning before the heat builds.
