Nairobi Wildlife Rescue Tour Guide

A typical half-day wildlife rescue tour in Nairobi takes you first to the elephant orphanage where you watch baby elephants being bottle-fed and playing in the mud. The experience is surprisingly moving – these are genuine orphans rescued from the wild after losing their mothers to poaching or drought. You'll then head to the Giraffe Centre where you can hand-feed Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform. The whole thing usually lasts 4-5 hours including transfers. It's not a safari with big cats in vast plains, but it offers close, meaningful contact with animals that are actually being helped.

The best time to go is during the dry seasons (January-February or July-September) when roads are better and animals are more active. Expect to pay around $80-160 per person depending on group size and whether you use a shared shuttle or private vehicle. Solo travelers and couples usually end up in small mixed groups.

Pick the morning orphanage visit if you can – the feeding sessions are more energetic and the light is better for photos. Skip any add-on "rescue centre" that isn't the main David Sheldrick orphanage; many are just mediocre zoos dressed up as sanctuaries. Bring cash for the optional giraffe feeding pellets and wear closed shoes – you'll be walking through some muddy areas.
