Visiting Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust runs two main visitor experiences just outside Nairobi: the elephant orphanage with its daily 11am public feeding session, and the nearby rhino sanctuary that you visit by vehicle. Expect a calm, well-run operation where you stand on a platform and watch baby elephants drink milk, play in the mud, and get escorted by their keepers. The rhino part is a short game drive where you’ll usually see several black rhinos plus zebra, giraffe and antelope. The whole visit rarely takes more than two hours once you arrive. It’s genuinely touching without being overly staged, but it is popular so the viewing area gets crowded with other tourists.

Best time is the dry season from July to October when the elephants are dustier and more active at the mud wallow; January–March is also good. Avoid the long rains in April–May if you can. Expect to pay around $50–90 per person for the orphanage entry and guided rhino sanctuary drive, depending on whether you join a small group tour or arrange private transport. Add transport from central Nairobi and you’re looking at $80–150 total.

Pick the morning orphanage visit and combine it with the rhino sanctuary if you have half a day; skip the gift shop and any add-on that promises “behind the scenes” access. Bring binoculars, wear neutral colors, and don’t expect a long safari-style experience — this is about supporting orphan care, not ticking off the Big Five.
