Should You Do a Nairobi Night Drive?

A Nairobi night drive takes you into the national park after sunset in an open-sided vehicle with a powerful spotlight. You’ll spend 90 minutes to two hours slowly cruising dirt tracks looking for animals that become active at night. Expect to see giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes easily. The real draw is spotting nocturnal species: bush babies, aardvarks, genets, and sometimes hyenas or lions. It’s not as reliable as daytime drives for big cats, but the quiet darkness and chance of seeing eyes reflecting in the spotlight create a completely different atmosphere from daytime safari. The drive ends with a short return to your hotel or a dinner option at one of the nearby lodges.

Best time is the dry season (June to October) when animals concentrate near water sources and roads are less muddy. Short rains in November and long rains April-May make tracks slippery and animal spotting harder. Expect to pay around $120–$220 per person depending on whether you go with a small group, private vehicle, or add dinner. Private vehicles with an experienced guide are worth the extra money; skip the big-bus group tours if you can. Bring a warm jacket, binoculars, and manage your expectations: you won’t see the volume of wildlife you get during the day, but the experience feels more intimate and adventurous.
