Maasai Market Shopping in Nairobi: What to Know

The Maasai Market is a lively open-air bazaar that moves between locations in Nairobi. On Saturdays it usually sets up in a large parking area near the city center or in popular spots like Westlands. Expect crowds, loud music, endless stalls selling beaded jewelry, carved wooden animals, Maasai blankets, baskets, and leather goods. It's colorful and energetic but also chaotic—vendors will call out to you constantly and prices start very high. Haggling is mandatory; walking away often drops the price by half or more. The experience feels more like a tourist-oriented souvenir market than an authentic village trading post.

Best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June to October or late December to March) when roads are better and crowds aren't swelled by rain cancellations. Expect to pay around $5–15 for small beaded items or keychains, $20–60 for decent-sized carvings or shukas, and $80–200 for larger pieces or good-quality leather bags after serious bargaining. Go on a Saturday morning if you want the full market atmosphere.

Pick well-made beaded jewelry and lightweight Maasai blankets—they're genuinely attractive and practical. Skip the mass-produced wooden animals and “antique” masks that look identical at every stall; the quality is usually poor and they're heavy to carry home. Bring small bills, wear comfortable shoes, and go with a local friend or driver if possible—the hassle factor drops dramatically.
