Glass Blowing Workshop in Nairobi: Worth It?

Expect a hot, hands-on experience where you’ll stand at a glowing furnace and shape molten glass under the guidance of a craftsman. Most sessions last 60–90 minutes and let you make two or three small items — a tumbler, a paperweight, or a simple vase. The studio is usually on the southern edge of the city near open land, so you get a bit of fresh air mixed with the roar of the furnace and the smell of hot glass. It’s genuinely physical work; you’ll leave sweaty, a little tired, and surprisingly proud of whatever lopsided object you create.

Best time is the cooler months from June to September when the weather isn’t brutal. Avoid the long rains (April–May) if you dislike mud or cancelled transfers. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person for a private or semi-private session. Longer 4–6 hour group tours that include a factory visit and lunch sit closer to the higher end.

Tip: Book the shorter private bench session rather than a big group tour — you get far more actual blowing time. Skip trying to make anything too ambitious on your first go; simple shapes with one color turn out better and travel home more safely. Wear closed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
