A Nairobi safari balloon experience usually means an early-morning flight over the Maasai Mara (most operators transfer you from Nairobi). You leave your hotel around 4am, drive 4–5 hours to the launch site, and climb into a large basket as the sun rises. The flight itself lasts about an hour, drifting silently over plains, acacia trees, and hopefully herds of zebra, wildebeest, or giraffe. After landing you get a champagne breakfast on the grass, then continue with a game drive. The whole day is long (you return to Nairobi around 6–7pm) but the aerial perspective is genuinely special and different from a regular jeep safari.
Best time is June to October during the dry season and wildebeest migration; you’ll see far more animals and the grass is short for clearer views. Expect to pay around $2,000–$2,800 per person when including transfers from Nairobi, the balloon flight, breakfast, and a game drive. Shorter add-on flights from Mara lodges start lower but still run $400–$650 on top of your existing safari.
Tip: Book the full-day version that includes the game drive afterward; the balloon alone feels too short. Skip combining it with a first-time safari if you only have 2–3 days total in Kenya; the travel time eats most of your day and you’ll enjoy it more after you’ve already seen animals up close from a vehicle.
