A night game drive in Nairobi National Park is short, bumpy, and genuinely atmospheric. You leave the city traffic behind, enter the park as the sun drops, and suddenly the same plains feel completely different under spotlight. Expect to see black rhino (often the highlight), hyenas, occasional leopard, and lots of smaller stuff like genets, bush babies, and spring hares that you never see during the day. The city skyline glowing on the horizon while animals move around you is surreal. Drives usually last 2–3 hours; it's not a long safari, but it's very different from a standard daytime visit.
Best time is June to October (dry season) when animals concentrate near water and the tracks aren't a mud bath. January–February is also decent. Avoid the long rains (March–May) unless you like being stuck. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person including park fees and guide, depending whether you join a small group or book a private vehicle. Private is noticeably better here.
Tip: always choose the private night drive option if your budget allows; the shared ones can get crowded and noisy. Skip trying to combine it with a full-day tour the same day — you'll be exhausted. Bring a good jacket, binoculars, and a headlamp. The spotlight does most of the work, but you'll want your own light for getting in and out of the vehicle.
