Hot Glass Workshop in Nairobi: Worth It?

Expect a relaxed half-day trip out of central Nairobi to a working studio on the edge of the park. You'll watch live glassblowing demonstrations where artisans turn recycled bottles and scrap into vases, bowls, and decorative pieces. The process is genuinely interesting – the heat, the speed, the skill – and the guides explain the recycling angle without it feeling preachy. Most visits last 1.5–2.5 hours including a short canopy walk through the surrounding acacia trees. It's hands-off for visitors; you observe rather than blow glass yourself unless you book a special session.

Best time is the dry season from June to October or January to mid-March when roads are easier and dust is lower. Expect to pay around $45–85 per person including transport from central Nairobi; solo travelers or small groups pay on the higher side, while larger groups get better rates. It's good value if you enjoy seeing real craftsmanship.

Tip: buy one of the smaller, simpler items like a recycled glass tumbler or candle holder – they're genuinely useful and easy to pack. Skip the big statement vases unless you have bubble wrap and checked luggage; they're beautiful but a nightmare to get home in one piece. Wear closed shoes and bring a hat – it gets hot around the furnaces and the walk back to the vehicle is exposed.
