Should You Visit the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi?

The Giraffe Centre is a compact conservation and education site on the edge of Nairobi where you stand on a raised platform and hand-feed giraffes at eye level. Expect a busy, touristy experience that lasts 45-90 minutes: you'll get very close to 8-12 Rothschild giraffes, learn basic facts from the guides, and watch them use their long tongues to take pellets from your hand. It's genuinely fun for most people, especially kids, but it feels more like a managed zoo encounter than a wild safari. The centre does solid work breeding and reintroducing giraffes, so the conservation talk is legitimate even if the setting is contrived.

Best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June to October or late December to March) when roads are better and animals are more active. Expect to pay around $15-40 per person for entry if going independently, or $40-80 if bundled into a half-day tour with transport from central Nairobi. Morning visits (opens around 9am) are noticeably less crowded than afternoons.

Honest tips: Do it if you're short on time or traveling with children; skip it if you've already seen giraffes in the wild or are on a tight budget and prefer longer game drives. Pair it with the nearby elephant orphanage on the same morning if your schedule allows, but don't try to combine it with a full national park safari in one day.
