The Sheldrick elephant orphanage is one of the better day activities in Nairobi. You watch baby elephants being bottle-fed and playing in the mud at 11am or the afternoon public viewing session. The experience is genuinely moving without being overly staged – the keepers clearly know each animal and you learn a lot about the rescue and rehabilitation process. It's not a zoo; the elephants are wild-bound and only there until they're old enough to be released. Combine it with Nairobi National Park and you can easily fill a half or full day seeing rhinos, lions and giraffes in a surprisingly wild setting right on the city edge.
Expect to pay around $50-120 per person total depending on whether you do just the orphanage, add the park, and if you use private transport or join a small group. Best time is the dry season (June to October) when the babies are more active at the mud wallow and park game viewing is easier. Avoid weekends if you can – they're noticeably busier.
Honest tip: book the early 11am orphanage slot and go straight into the park afterward while the animals are still active. Skip the gift shop at the orphanage; the one at the park exit has similar stuff and supports the same cause. Bring binoculars for the park and wear neutral colors.
