Cape Town Boat Tours: Worth It?

Most boat tours in Cape Town leave from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and last 30–90 minutes. Expect a mix of harbour sightseeing, close-up views of sea lions on the breakwater, and, on longer trips, views of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles from the water. The experience is breezy and relaxing rather than thrilling; you’ll smell diesel and salt, hear gulls and engine noise, and usually get a basic commentary. It’s a solid way to see the city from a different angle and often the easiest place to spot seals and seabirds without driving anywhere.

The best time is December to March when the southeaster wind is lighter and the bay is calmer. Winter (June–August) brings bigger swells, colder wind, and higher chance of cancellations. Expect to pay around R250–R650 per adult depending on whether you choose a basic harbour cruise or a longer scenic sailing trip with drinks. Kids usually get a modest discount.

Pick a mid-morning departure on a catamaran or sailing boat if you want fewer crowds and better photos; skip the oversized party-style vessels that blast music and feel more like floating bars. Bring a jacket even on sunny days – it gets surprisingly cold once you’re moving.
