Puerto Vallarta Boat Tours: Worth It?

Most boat tours here run 3–6 hours and fall into two categories: snorkel trips to Los Arcos or the Marietas Islands, and sunset or bioluminescence cruises closer to town. Expect warm water, decent snorkeling with tropical fish and the occasional sea turtle, and a lot of other boats doing the exact same route. The guides are usually friendly, the boats range from basic pangas to larger catamarans with shaded seating and a cooler full of drinks. It’s a solid half-day on the water if you want to get offshore without committing to a full day at sea, but it’s rarely a solitary nature experience—think shared bays and photo stops rather than wilderness.

Best time is November through April when the water is clearer, the swell is lower, and you’re less likely to get rained on. Summer and early fall can be hot, humid, and rougher; many operators cut back their schedule then. Expect to pay around $45–90 per person depending on boat size, inclusions (lunch, gear, open bar), and whether it’s a small-group or mass-tour catamaran. Private charters jump to $300–600 for the boat.

Pick a smaller snorkel tour to Los Arcos if you actually want to see marine life; skip the giant party catamarans with loud music and watered-down margaritas unless your group just wants to drink and float. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one—rental gear is often well-used. Go early in the morning to beat both the crowds and the afternoon wind.
