The boat ride to Elephanta takes about an hour each way across Mumbai harbour. Once there you climb roughly 100 steps (there are porters with chairs if you want to avoid the walk) to reach the rock-cut caves from the 5th-8th century. The main cave has impressive Shiva sculptures and lingams; the smaller caves are less interesting. Expect crowds on weekends and during holidays. The whole trip usually takes 4–5 hours including travel and time on the island. Monkeys are everywhere – keep food zipped away and don’t get too close.
Best time is November to early March when it’s cooler and drier. Avoid June to September; the sea gets rough and ferries are often cancelled. Expect to pay around $25–60 per person for a standard ferry ticket plus entry, or $50–120 if you go by private or speed boat. Shared tourist boats from the Gateway of India are cheapest but can feel packed and loud.
Honest tip: take the first ferry of the day to beat the worst heat and crowds. Skip the overpriced “luxury” packages that just add a guide who repeats basic facts; hire an independent guide on the island if you want one. Bring water, wear good shoes, and keep your return boat ticket safe – the last ferry back leaves around 5 pm.
