A typical Porto boat trip is a relaxed cruise along the Douro River, passing under the city’s six bridges while you get decent views of the Ribeira district, the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the dramatic river gorge. Most last 50–120 minutes. Expect a mix of sightseeing narration (sometimes in multiple languages), a fairly steady flow of other boats, and the gentle rocking of the river. It’s pleasant and low-effort, but not wildly adventurous. The water is usually calm; seasickness is rare unless the wind picks up.
Best time is May–June or September–early October: good weather, fewer crowds than July and August, and lower prices. In summer the river can get busy with boats circling like bumper cars and the city heat builds up on deck. Winter trips run but are colder and sometimes cancelled if the river is high. Expect to pay around €15–€25 for a standard one-hour six-bridges cruise and €20–€40 for the two-hour version that includes some wine or a light snack.
Pick the shorter six-bridges tour if you just want the classic photos and an easy overview. Skip the ones that promise “sunset and live fado” unless you’ve checked recent reviews; many feel padded. Sit on the right side when heading upstream for the better light on the old town. Bring a light jacket even in summer – it’s noticeably cooler on the water.
