A day trip to Aegina is one of the easiest and most relaxing escapes from Athens. The boat ride from Piraeus takes roughly 40 minutes on a fast ferry or 1.5–2 hours on a slower one. Once there you’ll find a calm island with a proper working port town, decent beaches, and the impressive Temple of Aphaia up on the hill. Expect a mix of locals and day-trippers; it never feels overly touristy even in summer. You can do it independently or join a guided boat tour that includes swimming stops. The pace is slow – perfect if you want a break from the city heat and crowds.
Best time is late spring (May–June) or September. July and August get very hot and the ferries are packed. Expect to pay around €35–€65 per person total for a basic independent round-trip ferry plus lunch and bus/taxi to the temple. Organized boat tours with swimming stops usually run €80–€120. One solid tip: skip the overpriced waterfront cafés in Aegina Town and walk 10 minutes into the back streets for better souvlaki and Greek salad at half the price. If you’re short on time, pick either the Temple of Aphaia or a swim stop – trying to do both in a rushed 4-hour visit usually leaves you stressed rather than relaxed.
