Visiting Mumbai's Buddhist Caves

Kanheri Caves are a collection of over 100 rock-cut Buddhist sites inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, dating from the 1st to 10th century. Expect a mix of monasteries, prayer halls, stupas, and some faded carvings and inscriptions. The experience involves walking uphill on uneven stone paths through forest; it's atmospheric and peaceful on quiet days but can feel basic compared to better-preserved sites like Ajanta or Ellora. You'll spend 2–4 hours there depending on your pace. The caves themselves are simple, dark chambers—bring a torch for the larger ones and watch your head on low entrances.

Best time is November to February when it's cooler and drier. Avoid the monsoon (June–September) as the paths get slippery and the park can close. Expect to pay around $25–45 per person for a half-day trip including transport from central Mumbai, entry fees, and a guide; solo travelers using public buses and taxis can keep it under $15 but it takes longer. Private cars with driver make it much easier.

Tip: visit early in the morning to beat the heat and weekend crowds from Mumbai. Skip the smaller, less interesting caves at the far end unless you're really into archaeology—focus on the main cluster and the large vihara with the seated Buddha. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water; there are no fancy facilities on site.
