Expect a mix of bumpy dirt roads through jungle and sugar cane fields, a couple of shallow river crossings, a quick stop at a cave or cenote for swimming, and usually a beach or ranch visit at the end. The driving itself is fun for about the first 45 minutes; after that it becomes a dusty, noisy procession that feels more like organized herding than true adventure. It's a decent half-day activity if you want to get out of the resort, but it's not the wild jungle expedition some photos suggest. Groups are often large, so don't expect solitude.

The best time is December to April when it's drier and the trails are less muddy. Rainy season (May-November) makes the rides messier and the bugs worse. Expect to pay around $50-90 per person depending on whether it's a basic buggy tour or one that includes lunch, snorkeling, or a longer route. Private tours cost noticeably more.

Tip: Choose the smaller 2-person buggies over the big 4-seaters if you want to actually drive; the big ones often have a driver and you just sit there.
