The Santiago cable car lifts you quickly from the edge of Parque Metropolitano up to Cerro San Cristóbal, giving you sweeping views over the city and, on clear days, the Andes. The ride itself lasts about 10-15 minutes each way. At the top you’ll find a viewpoint, a small chapel, and paths leading to the towering Virgin Mary statue. It’s a straightforward, pleasant trip rather than a thrill ride – the cars are enclosed and move at a steady pace. Most people combine it with time at the summit or a walk down through the park, which can easily fill half a day.
Best time is spring (September–November) or fall (March–May) when the air is clearer and temperatures are comfortable. Summer can be hazy and hot; winter often brings smog that ruins the views. Expect to pay around $15–35 per person depending on whether you buy a simple round-trip ticket or a package that includes the funicular, entrance to the park, and a short guided walk. Tickets bought on-site are usually cheaper than pre-booked tours.
Pick the basic round-trip cable car ticket and walk the park at your own pace – it’s more relaxed and you avoid being herded. Skip the long combined “Skyline” tours unless you really want a guide; they’re longer but the walking sections are not especially interesting. Go early in the morning for the cleanest air and fewest crowds.
