Carouge Market: Worth a Visit?

Carouge market is a relaxed, neighborhood affair just outside Geneva's city center. Expect rows of stalls selling fresh produce, local cheeses, cured meats, flowers, and a decent selection of regional wines and baked goods. It's smaller and more low-key than the big tourist markets, with a genuine local feel. Locals shop here for the week, so the quality is solid but the vibe is functional rather than flashy. You can easily cover it in 45 minutes to an hour unless you stop to eat.

Best time to go is Saturday morning from April through October when the market is at its fullest. Summer brings more variety and outdoor seating at the surrounding cafés. Expect to pay around CHF 15-35 per person if you're buying picnic items or a light lunch (coffee and croissant, some cheese and bread, a glass of wine). A full sit-down meal at one of the nearby restaurants will push that to CHF 40-60.

Tip: Buy cheese and charcuterie here - the quality is excellent and vendors are usually happy to let you taste. Skip the generic souvenirs and overpriced "artisanal" honey; those tend to be the same stuff you'll find everywhere else. Arrive before 11am to avoid the crowds and disappearing stock of the best baked goods.
