Mont Salève is the big green wall you see from Geneva. It's an easy half-day trip that gives you surprisingly good views over the city, the lake, and the Alps beyond. Expect a steep but well-maintained trail that takes most people about two hours up. The path is rocky in places and can be slippery when wet. Once on top you get wide open meadows, a few cafés, and the option to walk along the ridge. Coming down, most people take the cable car instead of retracing their steps. The whole outing from central Geneva usually takes 4–6 hours including transport.
Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–October). Summer weekends get crowded with local families; go early or on a weekday if you want quieter trails. In winter the cable car still runs but the upper trails are often snowy and require proper boots. Expect to pay around CHF 25–45 per person total: bus or car to the base, the hike itself is free, and a one-way cable car ticket down adds roughly CHF 12–18 depending on season.
Smart choice: take the bus from Geneva to the base, hike up, then ride the cable car down. Skip trying to drive up yourself on busy weekends – parking is limited and the bus is faster. Bring water and decent shoes; the trail is no joke in flip-flops.
