Cable Car to Salève from Geneva: Worth It?

The cable car rises quickly from the valley floor just outside Geneva, covering 660 meters of elevation in about five minutes. At the top you step out onto a broad, often windy plateau with sweeping views over the city, the lake, and the Jura. Expect a simple station, a small café, and a network of easy walks and gravel paths rather than a full mountain resort. In clear weather the panorama is genuinely impressive; on hazy or cloudy days it can feel like a lot of effort for limited payoff. The ride itself is straightforward and not especially thrilling – it's functional transport, not an amusement-park gondola.

Best time is late spring through early autumn on a clear weekday morning. Summer weekends get crowded with local families and the car can have queues. Expect to pay around CHF 25–35 for a round-trip adult ticket, less if you combine it with public transport from central Geneva. Children and passes bring the price down noticeably.

Pick the early cable car and walk the short loop to the viewpoint facing Mont Blanc if the weather allows; skip the overpriced snacks at the summit café and bring your own picnic instead. If you're short on time or the forecast is poor, this trip is easy to drop from your itinerary – the view from the lakefront is often enough.
