Mount Salève Hike from Geneva: Worth It?

A short bus ride from central Geneva gets you to the base of Mount Salève, often called the city's backyard mountain. Expect a steep but well-marked trail that takes about two hours to reach the ridge. The payoff is a sweeping view over the whole Geneva basin, the Jura, and Mont Blanc on clear days. The upper part has gentle paths along the plateau where you can wander for hours. Most people hike up and take the cable car down, which saves tired knees and gives a fun contrast to the climb. It's a solid half-day outing rather than an epic trek.

The best time is late spring through early autumn (May to October). Summer can be hot on the exposed lower slopes, so start early. Avoid winter unless you have proper gear for snow and ice. Expect to pay around CHF 25-40 per person total, covering bus tickets both ways and the cable car descent. Bring water, good shoes, and a picnic; there are a few basic cafés at the top but nothing fancy.

Pick the main trail from the cable car station if it's your first time; it's straightforward and scenic. Skip trying to do the full round trip on foot unless you're very fit, the descent is long and monotonous. Check the weather forecast and cable car schedule before leaving town; clouds can roll in fast and ruin the view.
