Should You Do a Lake Geneva Boat Tour?

A tour du lac is a relaxed boat trip that circles Lake Geneva, usually lasting 2.5 to 4 hours depending on whether it stops in places like Lausanne, Montreux or Yvoire. Expect comfortable seating, decent commentary in a few languages, and nice views of the Alps, the Jet d'Eau, and the lakeside towns. It's not thrilling but it's genuinely pleasant on a clear day. The boat is stable, there's a bar and toilets, and you can move around on deck or sit inside. In summer the upper deck gets crowded quickly so arrive early if you want a good spot.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May to September). June and September are ideal: fewer crowds, still warm, and the light on the mountains is beautiful. Expect to pay around CHF 50-90 per adult for a standard cruise; longer trips with stops or dinner options push toward the higher end. Kids and passes like the Swiss Travel Pass usually get decent discounts.

Pick the shorter midday or early afternoon departure if it's your first visit; the full loop without long stops is usually enough. Skip the overpriced dinner cruise unless you really want the evening light; the food is average for the money. Bring sunglasses, a light jacket, and your own snacks if you're on a budget.
