Swimming in Lake Geneva: What to Know

Lake Geneva offers clean, refreshing water right in the city during summer. Expect cold water even in July and August (usually 20-24°C), pleasant but brisk. The free public beaches are small, get packed on hot weekends, and often have more pebbles than sand. Paid lidos give you proper changing rooms, showers, and sometimes a bit more space; they're still busy but feel more organized. The water is generally clear and clean enough for comfortable swimming, though you share it with boats and the occasional duck.

Best time is mid-June to early September when air temperatures are reliably warm. Expect to pay around $5-15 for a day at a managed lido or beach club; completely free spots exist but come with zero facilities and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Bring water shoes if you're picky about stones.

Pick a weekday morning if you can; the atmosphere is calmer and you actually get some room to swim. Skip the big sightseeing boat trips if your goal is swimming – they're pleasant but overpriced for what they are. Just head to the water, pick your spot based on how much comfort you want to pay for, and enjoy the Alps backdrop while floating.
