Castillo San Cristobal is a massive 18th-century Spanish fort that dominates the east side of Old San Juan. On a standard tour you’ll walk through tunnels, climb sentry towers, and stand on the massive outer walls with sweeping views of the Atlantic and the city. Expect 45-90 minutes depending on whether you go solo with the audio guide or join a small group walk. The site is hilly with uneven stone paths and multiple staircases, so wear good shoes and bring water. It’s genuinely interesting if you like military history or want context for how San Juan was defended for centuries; it feels less crowded than the smaller El Morro fort nearby.
Best time to visit is December through April when the weather is drier and temperatures are milder. Expect to pay around $10-15 for basic entry; guided walking tours that include Old San Juan run $45-60 per person. Skip the big bus tours that only give you 30 minutes at the fort; they feel rushed. Instead, either go early in the morning on your own with the free phone audio tour or book a small-group walking tour that combines both Cristobal and the city walls. Bring a hat and sunscreen; there’s very little shade once you’re on the battlements.
