Prague Castle is massive and worth seeing, but it's not the intimate fairytale experience some photos suggest. A typical guided tour lasts 2-3 hours and takes you through the main courtyards, St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, and a few smaller sights. Expect crowds, lots of walking on cobblestones, and decent historical explanations if you choose a good guide. The views over the city are genuinely excellent, especially in the late afternoon. The site itself is free to wander, but many of the important interiors require tickets.
The best time to visit is shoulder season (April-May or September-October) when crowds are manageable and the weather is usually decent. Summers are beautiful but packed; winter visits can be atmospheric with fewer people though it gets dark early and cold. Expect to pay around $45-80 per person for a decent group guided tour that includes entry to the main sights. Private tours run $150-250 for a couple.
Pick a tour that includes skip-the-line cathedral entry and focuses on the castle itself rather than combining it with a river cruise or Old Town walk unless you specifically want that. Skip the Golden Lane if you're short on time or energy - it's cute but mostly just a row of gift shops now. Arrive early or late in the day if possible; the place feels completely different with fewer tour groups around.
