A day of castle touring from Copenhagen usually means leaving the city by bus or minivan with a small group. Expect 3–7 hours total, including 45–90 minutes at each site. You’ll see grand Renaissance halls, royal reception rooms, and fortified walls, plus some walking on uneven cobblestones. Guides mix history with stories about Danish kings and queens; the best ones keep it lively without too much fluff. The experience feels more like an educational day trip than a flashy tourist trap, but it can get tiring if you visit multiple castles back-to-back.
Summer (June–August) is easiest – long daylight, gardens in bloom, and most sites fully open. Shoulder seasons (April–May, September) are quieter and often cheaper. Expect to pay around $140–$220 per person for a half- or full-day guided tour including transport; private tours or ones with more castles push toward the higher end. Entry fees are sometimes included, sometimes extra.
Pick the tour that visits both Frederiksborg and Kronborg if you want variety – one palace, one proper castle with strong Hamlet connections. Skip the ones that cram in too many quick stops plus the Little Mermaid; you end up rushed and seeing mostly the outside of things. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and double-check whether lunch is on your own.
