Should You Tour Copenhagen's Royal Palaces?

A day tour from Copenhagen typically takes you to two or three royal sites north of the city. Expect to spend most of the day on a bus with a guide narrating Danish royal history. Frederiksborg Castle is the highlight: a grand Renaissance building set on a lake with impressive interiors and a large portrait collection. Kronborg (Hamlet’s castle) at Helsingør feels more like a working fortress with sea views and stark military architecture. You’ll usually get a photo stop at Fredensborg Palace but rarely go inside. The experience is relaxed rather than intense; you walk at a sensible pace, spend about an hour at each main site, and have free time for lunch and the gift shops.

The best time to go is May through September when the palaces look their best and gardens are open. Summer weekends get crowded, so midweek is smarter. Expect to pay around $120–$180 per person for a full-day tour including transport, guide, and entry fees. Spring and autumn tours are cheaper and less busy. One honest tip: choose the version that includes both Frederiksborg and Kronborg; skip any tour that tries to cram in too many minor stops. Bring comfortable shoes and a rain jacket – the grounds are beautiful but Danish weather can change quickly.
