Paris Catacombs: Worth It?

The Paris Catacombs are exactly what they sound like: a maze of tunnels stacked floor-to-ceiling with the bones of roughly six million people. Expect a cool, damp 1.5–2 hour visit that includes a steep spiral staircase down (about 130 steps), a short walk through dimly lit passages lined with skulls and femurs arranged in patterns, then a long climb back up. It’s atmospheric and sobering rather than scary, but the passages are narrow, the ground uneven, and there’s no bathroom once you’re underground. Claustrophobic travelers or anyone with mobility issues should think twice.

Best time is shoulder season (April–May or September–October) when crowds are lighter and temperatures underground stay a steady 14°C. Summer gets hot and sticky above ground while queues stretch around the block; winter can mean fewer tourists but colder, wetter conditions outside. Expect to pay around €40–70 per person depending on whether you choose a basic timed ticket or a small-group guided tour with skip-the-line access.

Pick the guided option if it’s your first visit; the guides give context that makes the piles of bones far more interesting. Skip the standard audio guide—it’s dry and you’ll spend half the time fiddling with the device instead of looking at your surroundings. Book at least a few days ahead no matter what; same-day tickets are rare.
