Should You Visit Sacré-Cœur in Paris?

Sacré-Cœur sits at the top of Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, giving you a sweeping view over the city that looks especially good at sunrise or just before sunset. The basilica itself is striking white stone on the outside and surprisingly calm inside despite the crowds. Expect steep steps (or a funicular if you prefer), street performers, and aggressive vendors at the bottom of the hill. The interior is free, relatively quiet, and worth 15-20 minutes of your time. The real draw is the panorama and the village-like streets of Montmartre just behind it.

Best time to visit is spring or early autumn on a weekday morning right after opening. Summer weekends get uncomfortably packed with tour groups. Expect to pay around €0-25 total per person: the basilica and main terrace are free, but the dome and crypt cost a small fee, a coffee or crêpe nearby runs €5-8, and you might spend extra on transport or a quick Montmartre wander. Skip the overpriced tourist restaurants at the base; walk five minutes further into the neighborhood for better options.

One solid tip: go up for sunrise if you're an early riser – the steps are nearly empty and the light is beautiful. Otherwise, visit late afternoon then stay for evening views when the city lights start coming on. Don't bother with a big guided tour of the inside; it's not that large and the audio guides add little. Just wander Montmartre afterward instead.
