Arc de Triomphe: Worth It?

The Arc de Triomphe sits at the center of one of the world's craziest traffic circles. Climbing the 284 steps rewards you with one of the best 360-degree views in Paris: rooftops, the Eiffel Tower in the distance, and the perfect perspective down the Champs-Élysées. At the base you'll see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the massive sculptures, but the real point of buying a ticket is getting above the chaos. Expect crowds at the top, especially in the late afternoon, and be prepared for a narrow spiral staircase both up and down. The whole visit takes 30-60 minutes depending on how long you linger with the view.

Best time to go is spring or fall when the weather is decent and lines aren't insane. Summer evenings stay light longer but get busier. Expect to pay around €13-18 for a standard ticket; audio guides or skip-the-line options push it closer to €25-35. Skip the guided tours unless you're really into Napoleonic history. The self-guided climb with the free basic audio explanation on your phone is plenty. One honest tip: go late afternoon for sunset if the weather cooperates, but buy tickets online in advance. The view from the top is genuinely better than from the Eiffel Tower for seeing the city's layout, but if you're short on time or energy, you can appreciate the monument from the ground for free.
