Paris Catacombs: Worth It?

The Paris Catacombs are exactly what they sound like: underground tunnels stacked floor-to-ceiling with the bones of millions of Parisians. Expect a cool, damp 1.5 km walk through dimly lit passages where skulls and femurs form neat patterns. It's atmospheric and genuinely eerie, but it's also crowded, narrow in spots, and involves a spiral staircase descent of about 130 steps plus a steep climb back up. No toilets underground, limited space to stop, and you're moving at the pace of the group ahead of you. Most people spend 45-60 minutes down there.

Go in shoulder season (March-May or September-October) if you can. Summer gets hot and sticky above ground while lines bake in the sun; winter can be miserable if it's raining. Expect to pay around €30-45 per adult depending on whether you grab a basic timed ticket or a small-group guided tour with skip-the-line access. Audio guides are usually included with standard entry.

Book timed tickets in advance or you'll waste half a day in the queue. Skip the big group tours with 20+ people if you want to actually hear anything or set your own pace; a smaller guided option or just the standard audio guide works better for most travelers. Don't bring a big backpack or expect to take great photos – lighting is terrible and tripods are banned.
