The tour takes you about an hour west of Johannesburg to the Cradle of Humankind. First stop is usually Sterkfontein Caves, where you descend via stairs and walkways through cool, damp chambers to see where some of the world's most important hominid fossils were found. Expect slippery sections, uneven ground, and about 45-60 minutes underground; it's interesting but not spectacular if you've seen other cave systems. Then you head to Maropeng for an interactive museum that walks you through human evolution with decent exhibits, a short boat ride through "time," and some hands-on displays. The whole half-day trip runs 5-7 hours door-to-door including transfers.
Best time is the cooler, drier months from May to September when rain is minimal and the caves are less likely to flood. Summers can be hot and wet; note that the caves sometimes close after heavy rain. Expect to pay around $110-160 per person for a half-day guided trip from Johannesburg, including transport and entry. Full-day versions with extra stops push closer to $180.
Tip: Do both sites if it's your first visit; the caves give the physical "wow" while Maropeng adds context. Skip the overpriced add-on lunch at the visitor centre and bring your own snacks instead. Wear closed shoes with decent grip and a light jacket for the caves.
