Johannesburg Zoo: Worth Visiting?

The Johannesburg Zoo is a medium-sized city zoo with a decent collection of African animals including lions, elephants, giraffes, and various primates. Expect a half-day visit at a relaxed pace: walking paths are mostly shaded but can get hot, animal enclosures are a bit dated compared to top European or American zoos, and you'll see plenty of local families picnicking. The bird section and reptile house are surprisingly good; big cats and primates are the reliable highlights. It's not a wildlife safari but offers straightforward animal viewing without long drives.

Best time is the cooler, drier months from May to August when temperatures are comfortable for walking and animals are more active. Avoid midday in summer (December to February) as it gets extremely hot and many animals hide. Expect to pay around R150–R250 per adult for entry depending on whether you add extras like the aquarium or special feedings; kids are roughly half price. Tours from the city that include the zoo usually run $85–$130 per person.

Pick the early morning slot to beat both heat and crowds. Skip the overpriced souvenir shop and café near the entrance – bring your own snacks instead. If you're short on time or mainly want big game, rather spend the day on a proper lion park or sanctuary visit outside the city; the zoo works best if you already have a relaxed Johannesburg day to fill.
