Expect a physically active 2.5–3 hour trip involving climbing, crawling on your belly, squeezing through narrow passages, and navigating wet rock in a multi-level cave system under the Buda hills. It's the real thing – dark, muddy, and exciting – but not extreme caving. You'll wear a helmet, overalls, and headlamp provided on site. The experience is genuinely fun if you like getting dirty and don't mind tight spaces; it's less enjoyable if you're claustrophobic or have knee/back issues. Groups are small and guided.
The best time is spring or autumn when it's cooler underground and surface temperatures are comfortable. Summer works but can feel stuffy after exertion; winter is fine if you're prepared for cold outside. Expect to pay around €45–75 per person including gear and transport from central Budapest. Book ahead, especially on weekends.
Pick the longer adventure route that includes the full crawl sections – it's more memorable than the shorter, easier tours. Skip trying to do this as a last-minute add-on if you're already tired from sightseeing; you'll want decent energy and closed-toe shoes with good grip. Bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag for your dirty ones.
