Should You Do the CERN Tour in Geneva?

The CERN guided tour is a serious, science-focused visit rather than a flashy tourist attraction. Expect a mix of walking through the visitor centre, watching short films about particle physics, and seeing some of the actual experimental areas or control rooms when available. Tours last 2–3 hours and move at a brisk pace. The Science Gateway exhibition is modern and hands-on, good for all ages, but the real guided tour behind the scenes is more technical and can feel dry if you're not at least mildly interested in physics. Groups are kept small and security is tight – you'll need to book weeks ahead and bring ID.

Best time is spring or autumn when crowds are lighter and weather is decent for the outdoor sections. Summer gets hot and busy. Expect to pay around $15–35 per person depending on whether you choose a standard visit or an extended tour with more access. Kids under 12 are often free or discounted. One honest tip: pick the guided tour that includes a visit to an actual detector or accelerator tunnel if available – that's the part people remember. Skip the cafeteria lunch unless you're desperate; Geneva has far better options a short tram ride away in Meyrin or downtown.
