Chapman's Peak Drive is a spectacular 9 km coastal road carved into the cliffs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek. Expect jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic, steep drops, and a few hairpin bends that feel like a movie set. The drive itself takes 20-30 minutes each way, but you'll want to stop for photos. It's a toll road, so you pay to enter. Most people combine it with other sights; doing it as a standalone half-day makes sense only if you're based in Hout Bay or the Atlantic seaboard. The road occasionally closes after heavy rain or rockfalls, so check conditions the same morning.
Best time is summer (December to March) for long daylight and reliable weather, though shoulder months (October-November and April-May) are less crowded and still pleasant. Expect to pay around R300–R1200 per person depending on whether you rent a car and drive yourself, join a small shared tour, or book a private half-day trip with pickup. Fuel, toll, and any food or drinks are extra.
Tip: if your time is limited, do it as a private convertible or small-group tour rather than a packed full-day bus tour that also tries to squeeze in Cape Point and Boulders Beach – those days feel rushed. Skip trying to drive it at sunset unless you're very comfortable on mountain roads in fading light; the views are better with full sun anyway.
