Lion's Head Hike: What You Need to Know

Lion's Head offers one of the quickest, most rewarding views over Cape Town. Expect a steep but short climb of roughly 1.5–2 hours up and an hour down. The trail starts easy then gets rocky with some chain-assisted sections near the top. At the summit you'll get 360-degree views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic, and the city bowl. It's popular, so you'll share the path with plenty of other hikers and runners, especially at sunset. The wind can be brutal and the drop-offs are real—bring a head for heights.

The best time is summer (Dec–Mar) for long daylight and dry weather, though early mornings or late afternoons beat the midday heat. Shoulder seasons (Apr–May or Sep–Oct) are quieter with milder temperatures. Expect to pay around $15–40 total per person covering transport or a basic guided group; solo with your own Uber/taxi and no guide stays under $20 including snacks and water.

Pick the standard route up the front and down the same way unless you're experienced—skip the longer contour path that loops around the back unless you want a full-day adventure. Always check the wind forecast and take at least 2 liters of water, sunblock, and a jacket even if it feels warm at the bottom.
