Kirstenbosch is a large, beautiful botanical garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Expect well-maintained paths through fynbos, proteas, cycads and lush forested areas, with the mountain as a dramatic backdrop. It's peaceful rather than crowded, though popular with both tourists and locals. The Tree Canopy Walkway is the main highlight – a steel bridge that lifts you into the treetops. Most people spend 2–4 hours here; it's easy to walk but can feel long in full sun. Bring water, wear proper shoes, and don't underestimate how big it is.
The best time to visit is spring (September–November) when the fynbos is in flower, though it's lovely year-round. Summer (Dec–Feb) is warm but can be hot and busy; winter (Jun–Aug) is cooler, greener and much quieter. Expect to pay around $8–15 for entry depending on season and age. Guided tours or combined transport options push the total closer to $35–80 per person if you don't have a car.
Tip: Prioritise the main garden and canopy walkway; skip the small 'useful plants' section unless you're really into ethnobotany. Go early in the day – both for better light and to avoid the worst of any afternoon wind. If you're short on time or energy, this is skippable in favour of hiking Table Mountain itself, but it's one of the most pleasant, low-stress green spaces in Cape Town.
