Should You Do the Chiva Party Bus in Cartagena?

The chiva party bus is a rolling dance party on an open-sided, colorfully painted bus with reggaeton, salsa, and vallenato blasting while you cruise Cartagena at night. Expect a guide hyping the crowd, free rum-and-juice drinks passed around, and stops at a couple of clubs where the real party continues. It's loud, sweaty, social, and very touristy—great if you want to meet people and dance without planning anything, less ideal if you prefer chill evenings or authentic local experiences. The tour usually lasts 3–4 hours and often ends with entry to a disco in the Getsemaní area.

Best time is December to March during dry season when nights are cooler and less rainy. Expect to pay around $40–70 per person depending on whether it includes pickup, open bar, and disco entry. The cheaper end is basically just the bus ride with a few drinks; the higher end bundles more stops and club access.

Tip: Pick the version that starts a bit later (around 8–9 pm) so you aren't exhausted by midnight. Skip the cheapest tours that only circle the old city without club entry—you'll just end up paying extra at the door anyway. Bring small cash for tips or bottled water, wear comfortable shoes you can dance in, and don't overdo the free rum if you want to remember the night.
