The Cairo Citadel sits on a hill above the city and gives you sweeping views across Cairo, especially at sunset. Inside you’ll find several mosques (including the impressive Muhammad Ali Mosque), a few small museums, and some gardens. Expect crowds, uneven paths, and a mix of serious historical sites and tourist-oriented areas. It’s an easy half-day visit that combines well with Old Cairo or a quick stop after the Pyramids. The site is large, so wear decent shoes and bring water; it can feel very exposed in the sun.
Best time to visit is winter (November to March) when it’s cooler. Avoid midday in summer. Expect to pay around $15–35 per person including transport and a basic guide; private tours with pickup push toward the higher end while just buying tickets on arrival and using an audio guide or your own research keeps it cheaper. A decent driver for the day usually adds $20–40 depending on group size.
Pick the Muhammad Ali Mosque and the main terrace for photos and scale. Skip the lower-priced “museums” unless you’re really into military history or carriages—they’re mostly forgettable. Go early if you want quieter photos, or late afternoon for the best light on the city below.
