Expect a loud, dusty, surprisingly fun hour tearing around the sand dunes just behind the Giza Pyramids. Tours usually pick you up from your Cairo hotel, drive you through chaotic traffic to the desert edge, give you a quick (and often inadequate) safety briefing, then let you loose on 250-350cc ATVs. You’ll ride in a convoy, stop for photos with the Pyramids in the background, and sometimes add a short camel ride. It’s not remote wilderness – you’ll still see power lines and other groups – but the contrast between city chaos and open sand is striking. Sunset rides are especially popular because the light on the Pyramids is unbeatable.
Best time is October to April when daytime temperatures are tolerable; skip the scorching May–September unless you enjoy riding in 40°C heat. Expect to pay around $25–55 per person for a one-hour ride including transfer. Private tours or longer two-hour outings sit at the higher end. Cheaper group deals can drop under $20 but often mean more waiting around and larger convoys.
Tip: pay a bit more for a private or small-group departure so you’re not stuck behind nervous beginners. Skip the add-on “VIP” photo packages and camel rides – they’re rushed and overpriced. Wear closed shoes, long trousers, and bring a scarf or buff for the sand; sunglasses are essential even at sunset.
