Saqqara Day Trip from Cairo: Worth It?

Saqqara offers a much quieter, more intimate look at ancient Egypt than the Giza plateau. Expect to walk around the Step Pyramid of Djoser (the world's first pyramid), explore some beautifully preserved mastaba tombs with vivid wall carvings, and see the impressive Serapeum where sacred bulls were buried. Most half-day trips also stop at Memphis and sometimes Dahshur, adding variety but stretching the day to 6–8 hours. The site is large, sandy, and exposed, so you'll do a fair bit of walking in the heat. It's genuinely interesting if you like ancient history, but can feel like "more ruins" if you're already pyramid-fatigued after Giza.

Best time to go is winter (November–March) when temperatures are manageable. Avoid summer unless you enjoy 40°C+ heat. Expect to pay around $60–120 per person for a private guided trip including transport, guide, and entry fees; shared tours can dip lower but you'll share your time with others. Private is worth it here for flexibility.

Honest tips: Prioritize Saqqara and maybe one extra site (Dahshur is worth it for the Red Pyramid interior). Skip Memphis if you're short on time; the open-air museum is underwhelming compared to the pyramids. Wear sturdy closed shoes, bring plenty of water, and go early in the morning to beat both the heat and the bigger groups.
